Notes & Reviews:

Two legendary Austrian artists interpret two of Mozart's piano concertos. Nikolaus Harnoncourt, for the first time, conducts Mozart's piano concertos with his orchestra, Concentus Musicus Wien, which he founded in 1953. This recording also marks the first time that pianist, Rudolf Buchbinder has been heard on the Walter pianoforte, the same piano Mozart used during the composition and premieres of these two piano concertos from 1786. Concerto No. 25 is one of the most expansive of all classical concertos, while the Adagio from Concerto No. 23 is one of the most beautiful and melodious movements that Mozart composed.

Perhaps no single musician has ever achieved such high accomplishment across such a broad span of repertory as Nikolaus Harnoncourt. Starting out as a cellist with the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, he became interested in performing music of the past upon historically correct instruments and was one of the first professional musicians to do so. In 1953, Harnoncourt and his wife Alice founded the Concentus Musicus Wien, the first professional Baroque orchestra. Over the course of a stunningly influential career, he has received many awards including top recording medals from at least six European festivals, a Gramophone Award for Special Achievement and a Grammy® Award.

Rudolf Buchbinder is firmly established as one of the world's foremost pianists and is frequently invited to perform with major orchestras and at festivals around the world. Noted for his taste and precise technique, Buchbinder is known for his performance of Austro-Germanic Classical and Romantic composers, especially the complete Haydn piano sonatas. He has worked with Harnoncourt before on their very successful recording of the Brahms concertos.
