Notes & Reviews:
Singer and actress Tara Hugo reimagines and reinterprets the Philip Glass songbook on Orange Mountain's recording Tara Hugo Sings Philip Glass. Glass is mostly known for his large-scale operas and symphonies. However, his long-time producer Kurt Munkacsi had harbored a desire to hear the Glass songs in the context of a collection interpreted by a singer who concentrates on communicating lyrics through her singing. This set of songs also presents pieces that the composer wrote at different times of his career for different projects with different collaborators including Natalie Merchant, Allen Ginsberg, Leonard Cohen and Mick Jagger. It also includes beautiful melodies written by Glass, arranged for small ensemble by Trevor Gureckis and set to lyrics written by Hugo.
The Times (UK)
There's punch and wit in the intense delivery of Tara Hugo.
American Record Guide, March / April 2013
Tara Hugo is perhaps best known as an actress. This program includes songs from that cycle as well as other vocal pieces from Monsters of Grace, Hydrogen Jukebox, and the soundtracks to Bent and (possibly) Neverwas (in arrangements by Trevor Gureckis). Hugo sings well, projecting the text and her own personality simply but effectively. The musicians play very well and the sound engineering is very well done.
