Notes & Reviews:
The Golden Ticket, a new opera based on Roald Dahl's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, was commissioned by the American Lyric Theater and Felicity Dahl. The seeds for The Golden Ticket were planted in 1997 when librettist Donald Sturrock and composer Peter Ash listened to some songs for a proposed new musical of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Ash's reaction was that it needed to be an opera and they embarked on a long journey that culminated in The Golden Ticket. Over the 13 years leading up to the world premiere, the work faced many obstacles - legal, financial and production. Ultimately the Opera Theatre of Saint Louis gave the world premiere and a further production was mounted by The Atlanta Opera. This recording is taken from a live performance of The Atlanta Opera in March, 2012. The opera captures Dahl's fantastic imagination in the libretto and the music is beautiful and theatrical. The score used many traditional operatic conventions to help portray the different characters and is a perfect way to introduce young audiences to opera. However, this is music and a story for the young at heart - not just children.Notes & Reviews:
