It opens with the very early piano 'Invention' (1948), a minute-long prelude roughly in the style of a Bartok Mikrokosmos excerpt. The rest of the pieces are well known. The joyous, tonal-modal Bagatelles for wind quintet (1953) are filled with humor, Hungarian flavor. It's a real crowd-pleaser. We reach the avant-garde 60s with the famous Volumina (1961-62, rev. 1966) for organ and Lux Aeterna (1966) for chorus, both used in Stanley Kubrick's 2001. The space-age clusters made the composer famous. On that same Wergo is a performance of the Ten Pieces for Wind Quintet (1968) by players of the Southwest German Radio, Baden-Baden, where the first movement sounds for the entire world like an organ. This is a good introduction to Ligeti's music.
