Notes & Reviews:

Mendelssohn's magnificent Violin Concerto would never have been written if not for Ferdinand David, whose incomparable violin playing fascinated and inspired his famous friend. Now Stephan Schardt and Philipp Vogler are presenting a fine selection of highly appealing compositions by this genial virtuoso. His playing technique apparently knew no bounds, but he nevertheless placed his virtuosity at the service of the profoundest musicality and did so with good taste.

David began his studies with Louis Spohr at the young age of thirteen - the beginning of a successful career during which he would rise to the post of concertmaster at Leipzig's Gewandhaus and perform as a soloist on international tours. David was the central personality of the German violin school, not least as Joseph Joachim's teacher, and playing in this line of tradition has continued to mark generations of violinists right through to the present.

For this recording the musicians were able to draw on the first editions of works from Joseph Joachim's personal papers. In them David had meticulously prescribed bowings and fingerings - with a stunning result: it is fascinating how directly these rather "technical" playing instructions influence the interpretation of the music!

American Record Guide, May/June 2013
David dedicated his 12 Salon Pieces, Op. 24, to Cecilie Mendelssohn, the wife of Felix. They are full of friendly and often humorous references to Beethoven and Mozart. The Impromptus are friendly and charming virtuoso pieces of the period that combine brilliance with lovely lyricism. The playing is historically informed and absolutely appropriate for the music, which certainly deserves to be heard.
