With this third volume in the "Piano Rarities" series, Cyprien Katsaris continues exploring the almost limitless world of transcriptions for solo piano. The album, largely devoted to Russian and Central European composers, offers tastes of the many aspects of the art of transcription. Melodies by Dvo? rak, Tchaikovsky, Moniuszko, and Karlowicz offer up their charms in these arrangements, in which the transcribers each pit their ingenuity against the others', imparting the qualities of true piano romances. The orchestral music of Khachaturian lends itself wonderfully to the piano; the extravagant virtuosity of the Sabre Dance keeps easy company with such moving pieces as the Lullaby or the Adagio from Spartacus.
