Notes & Reviews:

In the English-speaking world, his contemporary Luigi Dallapiccola may be better known, but Petrassi was just as highly regarded in his home country. His music, inspired by Stravinsky and Hindemith, is dynamic and colorful, although perhaps emotionally reserved by the standards of his countrymen.

BBC Music Magazine, March 2013
[Cvilak] sounds sweet, warm and electrifying when required, and Noseda directs his Turin forces with authority and understanding of these powerful works. I hope Chandos will give us more Petrassi from this team.

Gramophone Magazine, March 2013
The performances by the forces of Teatro Regio, Turin, are committed and persuasive, though both works sound like they need a little more 'living with'. Soprano Sabina Cvilak is taxed at times by Petrassi's tough, high vocal lines but otherwise hers is a gutsy account.

American Record Guide, May/June 2013
Both works are admirable on their own terms. Petrassi makes his points with bold strokes of color and a flair for vivid communication. Both are hard to resist. Both run continuously with well designed orchestral bridges spanning the passages of text and piecing things together. Petrassi is a fellow who knows how to get where he needs to go. The playing and singing are strong, the soloist is fine, and everything comes together securely under Maestro Noseda's baton. The engineers mix the ingredients together into powerful, room filling sound, and the annotators give us texts and translations.
