Shostakovich: Symphony No. 5 / Yuri Temirkanov, St. Petersburg PO

Notes & Reviews:

After winning the prestigious All-Soviet National Conducting Competition in 1966, Yuri Temirkanov was invited by Kiril Kondrashin to tour Europe and the United States with legendary violinist David Oistrakh and the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra. The very next year, Temirkanov made his debut with the St Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra (then called the Leningrad Philharmonic) and in early 1967, was invited to join the orchestra as Assistant Conductor to Yevgeny Mravinsky. Since 1988, Temirkanov has been the Artistic Director and Chief Conductor of the St Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra, with whom he regularly undertakes major international tours and recordings. Other positions he holds include Music Director of the Teatro Regio di Parma and Music Director Emeritus of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. This new live recording features Shostakovich's fifth symphony performed by the orchestra that premièred the work in 1937.
