Notes & Reviews:

Born in 1973, British composer Thomas Hyde studied at Oxford University and at the Royal Academy of Music. His music is performed increasingly throughout the UK and abroad. He is on the faculties of Worcester College, Oxford and City University, London. This disc shows Hyde as a fastidious composer of immaculately crafted chamber music.

American Record Guide, September/October 2013
Thomas Hyde (b. 1978) is an English composer who has written in most genres. He tells us he likes best composing chamber music. I must say he has a feeling for it. "Autumnal" is the title of this release. Hyde is clearly a man who appreciates the world and Nature. His music is varied in texture, tonality, and atonality; and he likes variety in instrumental color - which holds the attention. A piano trio portraying Three Dancers is a light and colorful way to begin the show. Then we become Autumnal with a 15-minute viola concerto accompanied by flute, clarinet, harp, and cello. It is here only that a conductor appears. It is a lovely piece. Three Nocturnes for piano are played with mystery by Puzaite. The cello suite is 16 minutes of warmth and variety. Jenkinson is in every piece here and seems to be having a fine time. For Winter Music she is joined by pianist Cousin. 'Birthday Song' is a little piece for string quartet that Hyde couldn't find a place for in the 21-minute String Quartet that closes the program. All of this music is really enjoyable, even the 12-tone elements in the quartet. This is a fine program introducing a fine composer, played with involvement and affection by a group of musicians that I hope will keep Hyde writing for them. The recording is in excellent sound and the balances are effective.
