Inspired by the Beatles' days playing in Hamburg and the '90s movie of the same name, Backbeat tells the story of their rise -- as well as the love triangle between drummer Stuart Sutcliffe, photographer Astrid Kirchnerr, and John Lennon -- through a mix of songs that would have been in the band's set lists at the time. This original cast recording features versions of songs the Beatles famously loved and covered ("Please Mr. Postman," "Twist and Shout," "Money"), as well as their first original songs ("P.S. I Love You," "Love Me Do," "I Want to Hold Your Hand"). Of course, nothing can compare to the real deal, but Backbeat's homages have enough authenticity and affection to please Beatles fans who like musicals, too.
