Notes & Reviews:

In their newest album, entitled Mendelssohn "Felix and Fanny" String Quartets, the Quatuor Ebene deliver another recording filled with innovation and virtuosity - here exploring the music and relationship between the brother and sister composing duo Felix and Fanny Mendelssohn. The immense outpouring of respect the quartet has for the Mendelssohns is brilliantly displayed in this release. They capture the Felix and Fanny both showed in these amazing pieces as well as their youthful, yet elegant and masterful talents.

Felix's Quartet in A Minor, Op 13, was completed in 1832. The quartet contains an allegro vivace, adagio non lento, allegretto con moto, and presto finale. Each movement is unique in its own way and portrays Felix's powerful voice as a composer. In 1834, Fanny composed the string Quartet in E flat Major. This string quartet contains an eloquent opening Adagio, C minor Allegretto, slow, yet intense, intense Romanze in G minor, and a challenging Allegro moderato finale. Lastly, Felixs wrote The Quartet in F Minor, Op. 80, months following Fanny's death. The piece contains an anguished Allegro vivace assai, dark Allegro assai, mo0ving Adagio in A flat major, and Finale that expresses extreme grief up to its anguished closing bars. This powerful piece would prove to be Felix's final piece as he died months after this completion.

All in all, Pierre Colombet, Gabriel Le Magadure, Mathieu Herzog, and Raphael Merlin Frenchmen of Quatuor Ebene do not cease to impress their audience, by creating a strong, yet pristine, performance to showcase the Mendelssohns greatest works.

National Public Radio
We are fortunate to have a clutch of young, extremely talented string quartets in action... but one except the Ebene Quartet can sing four-part harmonies, improvise solos on [jazz] standards, shred with conviction on the surf-rock classic 'Misirlou' and uncover the unique sound world of Faure, Debussy and Ravel.

BBC Music Magazine, April 2013
The Quatuor EbFne matches and in some respects exceeds [its] rivals in the commitment and physical impact of its playing...[and] employs the widest possible range of timbres and articulations in their use of non-vibrato particularly effective in the slow material that frames the entire work [Op. 13].

Gramophone Magazine, April 2013
This disc abounds in the kid of full-on playing and lively engagement with the music that we've come to expect from Quatuor +bFne, caught up close and personal by the microphone...With every disc that the +bFne record, there's the unmistakable sense that they have something to say and an urgent need to say it. Not everyone will respond to their approach, but to my mind they're one of the most thrilling quartets around today.

Sunday Times, 17th February 2013
[Fanny's] quartet, played with great conviction, is worth hearing - and even, formally and harmonically, more daring than Felix's. These are nonetheless, superb works, his finest quartets. This passionate account of the A minor is touched, as though in anticipation, by the F minor's darkness.

The Guardian, 7th February 2013
The EbFnes probe all three works with unflinching honesty and immediacy that don't make for easy listening, but are unforgettable.

The Independent, 27th January 2013
Quatuor EbFne's subtle performance seems designed to frame the darker soundworld of Fanny Mendelssohn's E-flat major Quartet in the best light.
