Notes & Reviews:
Though a gem among Verdi's 26 operas, I Lombardi alla prima crociata has been criminally underperformed in the repertoire. This historic mono recording, made in 1951 in Milan, features great Verdi interpreters of the time such as Mario Petri, Miriam Pirazzini, Aldo Bertocci, and Maria Vitale, remastered for optimum quality.

Both of these were issued by Cetra in 1951. This old performance had much in its favor, especially the dark, agile, biting Giselda of Maria Vitale. Tenor Gustavo Gallo has a fast, spinning vibrato. He's particularly eloquent in the Act 3 duet. Mario Petri's plump bass voice is another asset. I still found myself caught up in the honest, idiomatic singing.
