Commissioned by Minnesota's Black Label Movement dance company, Mary Ellen Childs' score for Wreck, like many of her works, finds itself grounded in the kinetic movement of the body itself and creates a cohesive whole, even though the dance for which it was written is not a narrative work.

Mary Ellen Childs, was written to accompany a dance program. With infectious melodies, frightening interludes, a penchant for arpeggiating cellos, and a humanistic sound is touching and illustrative. The tonal work has moments of extended techniques. Childs accomplishes quite a full sound with a clarinet, violin, percussion, two cellos, and electronics. The music is stirring and toe-tapping to start, with sweeping melodies over simple percussion and arpeggiated accompaniment, as in 'Anat', 'Wreck Theme', and 'The Lake'.
