Notes & Reviews:

The Nash Ensemble presents a program of works written at the Theresienstadt concentration camp by four Jewish composers who went on to be killed at Auschwitz, their music forgotten. In recent years, it has begun to be performed again and its extraordinary quality appreciated. One of the most popular works was Hans Krása's enchanting children's opera Brundibár, performed fifty-five times at the camp and presented here as a suite arranged by the composer David Matthews. Viktor Ullmann is represented by his String Quartet No.3, a lyrical, sumptuous work with a wistful quality, influenced by the Second Viennese School. Pavel Haas studied with Janácek and his vividly atmospheric String Quartet No.2, subtitled From the Monkey Mountains, not only shows the influence of his teacher but also displays a unique musical personality.

American Record Guide, July/August 2013
Hans Krasa's children's opera Brundibar (Bumblebee) was performed 55 times in Theresienstadt; it was actually composed in 1938. Petr Pokorny made a suite of all the main themes, and the Nash Ensemble commissioned David Matthews to arrange it for string quartet, piano, flute, clarinet, trumpet, and percussion. The sound overall is like a very innocent Kurt Weill; the tunes are charming and the arrangement effective. Viktor Ullman wrote three string quartets. It is brief - under 14 minutes - but full of excellent music and perfectly suited to the quartet medium. The movements flow into each other without much pause: a sweet, melancholy I, a spicy Scherzo with a tender second half, a mystical III, and an energetic finale that packs a lot of variety into its brief span. Gideon Klein's String Trio has a Czech folk influence and a lot of subtle moments in the I. II uses a Moravian folksong as its theme, and there are eight miniature variations; the tonality is fairly free. Pavel Haas wrote his Quartet No. 2 in 1925 and named it From the Monkey Mountains. 'Coach, Coachman, and Horse' has some of the most amusing tone-poetry I've ever heard. 'The Moon and Me' is a gray-blue nocturne. 'Wild Night' is a party piece, with a little Latin dance music and jazz. Nash Ensemble includes the optional percussion part Haas wrote. The players do a terrific job here; the sound is just fine. Notes in English, French, and German.
