Notes & Reviews:

This disc forms part of our ongoing Spanish Music series, performed by the BBC Philharmonic and its Chief Conductor, Juanjo Mena. Here the focus is on the orchestral works of the composer Joaquín Turina, one of the two leading Spanish composers of the twentieth century, the other being Manuel de Falla.

American Record Guide, July/August 2013
Danzas Fantasticas and Sinfonia Sevillana, his most famous orchestral works, are programmed together on several recordings. Mena's is at or near the top. The interpretations lean to the subtle and broad, they are lively enough. Lopez-Cobos is slightly brighter and better sprung rhythmically. Ritmos is probably Turina's third most famous orchestra piece, and it sits comfortably next to its more famous relatives. The rest of Mena's program is a collection soprano solos with orchestra, all relatively rare on recordings. Poema en Forma de Canciones (Poem in the Form of Songs) begins with an orchestral introduction. Swaying and lilting winds open 'Nunca Olvida', and the vocal component is quiet and sweetly inflected. 'Cantares' begins with Debussyian flutes that give way to some moderately showy flamenco styling in the voice. 'Los dos Miedos' begins contemplatively. The beautiful Saeta en Forma de Salve a la Virgen de la Esperanza honors the Virgin from Esperanza. The tempo is slow and the mood warm and heartfelt, with strong religious overtones. 'Farruca' is the only movement Turina orchestrated from Triptico, which he wrote for soprano Conchita Supervia. The farruca is a male dance. These performances coupled with the three orchestral works makes what appears to be the first in a Turina series from Chandos a must purchase for admirers of this composer.
