Notes & Reviews:

This second disc of orchestral works by Zádor includes his most-performed piece, the Divertimento for Strings and the composer's own favorite, Studies for Orchestra.

American Record Guide, July/August 2013
Zador was born in Hungary in 1894 and came to the United States in 1939. Hecht noted that he was "more Westernized than Bartok and...influenced a great deal by Rozsa". He was one of Rozsa's orchestrators and wrote a few film scores of his own. Much of his music sounds like movie scores from the 1940s and 50s. Elegie and Dance is Hungarian-sounding, with the 'Elegie' reminiscent of Bartok's 'Evening in the Village'. The Oboe Concerto is cheerful and pastoral. The other pieces are the same - attractive and enjoyable. There's some rhythmic bite and colorful orchestration. The musicians all play quite well, and the sound is fine. Hecht said, "I recommend this to anyone interested in American music with a foreign touch".
