Renowned as a pianist, d'Albert was also a gifted composer in the tradition of Brahms. The ambitious Symphony is his only work in this form. His two piano concertos can be heard on Naxos 8.553728.

The MDR Leipzig Radio Symphony Orchestra under Jun MSrkl have - to my ear - an ideal rich and burnished tone for this music. All departments of the orchestra give a good account but I must mention an excellent principal horn and clarinet.
