Notes & Reviews:

Volume 8 features two compositions from Busoni's teenage years (1881-83). Charming and engaging works which already reveal an inventive and personal accommodation with mid-19th century Romanticism.

American Record Guide, July/August 2013
Harden is a dedicated advocate for Busoni's music. Volume 8 of his project to record the complete cycle shows that these pieces are interesting enough to warrant more attention. Busoni's 24 Preludes are varied and engaging - quite an impressive achievement considering the composer's age at the time (15). Exemplary of his ability to fuse styles in a romantic idiom, they show not just the influence of Chopin, but also Bach, Beethoven, and even non-European influences (Prelude 8), demonstrated on a smaller scale. The Macchiette Medioevali, an exploration of medieval portrayals (the Lady, the Knight, the Page, and so on), is a charming set of character pieces evocative of Schumann. Harden performs these with elegance and clarity. This recording is enjoyable enough to encourage us to check out the other volumes.
