Notes & Reviews:
Il Burbero di buon cuore is based on one of the most popular and amusing French comedies by Carlo Goldoni, Le bourru bienfaisant. A brilliant libretto, music that can be both graceful and captivating, and a first rate cast make of this opera a welcome rediscovery. The music is simple, charming, orchestrated tastefully and with a wealth of colors.

The cast of this recording seems about ideal. One recognizes the names of a few internationally- known singers, such as tenor Saimir Pirgu, soprano Veronique Gens, and bass Luca Pisaroni. Just as good are soprano Elena de la Merced as Angelina, the main female role; Carlos Chausson, the curmudgeon of the title; mezzo Cecilia Diaz as the maid Marina, and tenor Juan Francisco Gatell as Angelica's lover. Christophe Rousset conducts the forces of the Teatro Real. The performers and the work deserve better packaging.
