Further to the incredible success of Alexandre Tharaud's Le Boeuf sure le Toit albu, EMI Classics is particularly proud to present this 4 CD set, embedding the complete recordings of the famous pianists duet: Wiener & Doucet.
Incredible doubles play virtuosity, extensive inventiveness, sophisticated sense of humor (one will never listen to the Tannhauser Overtue the same way after experiencing Wagneriana) were their particular features. Accompanists of the greatest pop singers of their time, Maurice Chevalier (7 tracks in the album), they have been massive Gershwin and Jazz importers and fine classical pianists as testifies their great interpretation of the Mozart 2 pianos Sonata.
In one word their incredible skills have made them invent... the cross-over. Alfred Cortot, the strongest authority in Chopin interpretation of this era has remarked that "all Chopin spirit and essence" was present in the Chopinanata hijack (which demonstrates the sad path the cross-over has taken since these musical holy times: we could not remember, say, Itzhak Perlman paying tribute to Andre Rieu).
With a wonderful iconography and with international Franco-Belgian liner notes (for those who read the French, please have a look at the passionate essay which accompanies this collection of rare recordings), with more than a half of these recordings finding in this set their CD premiere, and with some absolute unpublished material amongst them a uproarious Griegiana, this 4 CD set, presented in a nice clamshell boxset bring us in the beating heart o the Paris of the Annees folles : the Boeuf sur le toit.
The 78 RPM have been very carefully remastered which of course does not prevent these recording to have been recorded in the 1920 and 1930's. But this is joy, musicality and sparkling intelligence which flows from every single note of this recorded set.
