Notes & Reviews:

This compilation provides a showcase of the many aspects of the cello and the range of emotions and characters that the instrument is able to convey. Opening the collection is Debussy's technically demanding Sonata in D minor, a staple of the cello repertoire.

American Record Guide, July/August 2013
The title is apt. Contrasted periods and composers are played by two musicians who enjoy making the most of whatever mood the composer portrays. In the curious Debussy sonata each moment is part of a colorful or flavorful conversation between the players. Exaggeration of everything that happens is the rule of the game. Alfred Schnittke (1934-98) writes a three movement sonata that offers a serious and pungent review of Russia's state of mind towards the end of the last century. The middle Presto offers a fine contrast. This is an effective reading. Beethoven's Opus 102:2 also makes a meal of its slow movement and the rest of it is finely honed. For dessert, we have a suite for solo cello by Eef van Breen (b 1978). This covers the flavors, ending with Umami, a savory from the East. This is a fine ten-minute piece of pie in a very listenable idiom.
