Notes & Reviews:

When Bach was requested one day to compose for the lute, it was certainly no mere coincidence that he happened to choose to adapt one of his cello suites for this instrument. We still have the autograph manuscript of this arrangement, which is not the case for the suites themselves. This transcription, which is an exemplary piece of work, could but stimulate modern lutenists, fascinated by the all too rare compositions Bach wrote specifically for their instrument." Hopkinson Smith

Hi-Fi Plus, March 2013
Hopkinson Smith plays all three suites with great ease.

American Record Guide, July/August 2013
Hopkinson Smith is a highly regarded figure in the lute world - he's been around forever, a significant player and respected teacher. These performances are as one would expect: technically sure, elegant, and expressive. Despite the consecutive release numbers, these performances were recorded over two decades. Suites 1-3 were made in October 2012; 4 and 6 are from 1992, and 5 was recorded in 1980. And there have been changes over the years. Musicianship and taste are consistently fine. The three suites recorded just a few months ago replace that excitement with an easy grace. Smith adds discrete, stylish ornamentation.

Gramophone Magazine, August 2013
Smith generally takes a leisurely approach to tempo. One is thus able to savour Bach's writing, Smith extrapolations and the wine-dark tone of the instrument...even in the quicker dances he offers a melancholic ambivalence that is wholly satisfying.
