Some fans of Constantine Orbelian's work as conductor may still not be aware of his brilliant career as a concert pianist before he assumed the Moscow Chamber Orchestra's directorship in 1991. With this sterling reissue, which includes an exceptionally wide-ranging program, a new generation of listeners should come to appreciate his rare piano mastery.

A packed disc filled with varied and interesting repertoire. Orbelian's playing is vigorous and big-toned. The best performance here is the Shostakovich. Orbelian dives in fearlessly, with Korsakoff and the orchestra not far behind him.
