Notes & Reviews:

Carus' sixth installment in the complete works of Heinrich Schütz is presented with the guiding principle "historically informed - interpreted today". The Dresdner Kammerchor performs here under the direction of Hans-Christoph Rademann. Gamba player Hille Perl with her ensemble Sirius Viols joins the Schutz recordings from Carus for the first time.

American Record Guide, July/August 2013
The compressed action of Die Sieben Worte Jesu am Kreutz gives us a chance to hear Schntz's deft talent for dramatic expression on a small scale. The 'Introitus' and 'Conclusio' of this oratorio are essentially motets, while the rest of the drama is conveyed by soloists, string instruments, and continuo. It is a remarkable conflation of materials. The performance is extremely fine - very sensitive musicianship not only from the soloists and choir, but also the viols. Erbarm Dich Mein, O Herre Gott is recorded here for the first time. This sacred cantata, what Schntz would have called a Kleine Geistliche Konzert, calls for solo soprano, four obbligato viols, and continuo. The beauty of the work, therefore, relies on its emphasis on tone color and harmony. Schntz composed his Luke, John, and Matthew passions late in life, between 1663 and 1666. The St Luke Passion, like the others, is an austere piece of drama. The performance is wonderful - every bit as fine as Paul Hillier's recording with Ars Nova Copenhagen (DaCapo 8.204035; March/April 2012). Texts and notes are in English.
