It's striking how much this Passion by Homilius sounds like the passions and oratorios of J.S. Bach at times, especially in the choruses, but also in the recitatives. This new recording of the St. Mark Passion HoWV I.10 by Gottfried August Homilius (1714-1785) is an important release that should not slip by any collector unnoticed; it has been released by Carus and is the world premiere recording... ... read more ...
Over twelve years ago Carus re discovered the composer Gottfried August Homilius - longtime choirmaster of the famous Dresden Kreuzkirche. After two very successful releases of music for Passion (St. John Passion & Passion Cantata) the world premier recording of St. Marc Passion presents sensitive arias, unusual orchestral sounds and expressive turba choruses.

This is the first recording of Gottfried August Homilius's St Mark Passion. Homilius (1714- 85) had been a student of JS Bach in Leipzig before making his way (back) to Dresden, where he worked first as organist in the Frauenkirche (1742) and then as the city's Kreuzkantor (1755). The structure of Homilius's passion oratorio on the gospel of Mark shows striking resemblance to Bach's passions, especially in the sequence of choruses and Lutheran chorales, interwoven with dramatic recitatives and arias. The sound of horns, for example, is more modern. Listen, for example, to Jesus' aria 'Mit Preis und Ruhm Gekront', sung by Thomas Laske (baritone). the arias 'Er hat Dich Erretten Wollen' and 'Er Will Leiden' bear a pastoral suavity, with flutes and a calming triple meter. This is sheer delight. The chorus is spot on with its intonation and expression. The soloists are brilliant, balancing affect with technical virtuosity and ornamentation. The orchestra plays as if of a single mind, matching their ornamentation and articulation.
