Notes & Reviews:
American Record Guide, July/August 2013
George Fenton built his career as one of Britain's premier dramatic composers almost out of scratch. Largely self-taught, he moved from theatrical productions to television and eventually to films. He became the go-to composer for BBC's wildlife programs, with the network's Earth trilogy especially well received. The third of these was Frozen Planet, and Fenton's score is a near-ideal fit for the compelling visuals. Much of it is understated, in an intimate, chamber-music sort of way. It's hard not to be charmed by the deft orchestrations or the skillful balancing of dramatic sequences like 'Battle of Wills' with delicate piano and violin solos. Fenton, whose musical influences include Henry Mancini and the Beatles, can't resist a few electronic beats. Recorded in first-rate sound at the Angel recording studios, Frozen Planet is a pleasant surprise.
