Stanford: Violin Sonatas Nos.1 -2; Caoine 'A Lament'; Five Characteristic Pieces / Paul Barritt, violin; Catherine Edwards, piano

Notes & Reviews:

As a teenager in Dublin, Stanford recalled with affection the solo recitals of pianists Anton Rubinstein and Sigismond Thalberg and violinists Henry Vieuxtemps and Joseph Joachim, a friend of his father. Hearing Joachim play left a deep impression on Stanford and as a result of these formative experiences, Stanford became a devotee of chamber music. The pieces here, performed with delicacy on this reissue by Paul Barritt and Catherine Edwards offer an overview of the music Stanford wrote for violin and piano.
