Notes & Reviews:

Rarely recorded Ballets by Tommasini, Milhaud, Sauguet. Exceptional richness of musical colours. First Class, rousing interpretations.

BBC Music Magazine, July 2013
Volume Nine...is all delight...On this evidence there are plenty more small gems for Hänssler to bring to light.

Gramophone Magazine, July 2013
The discovery (for me, at least) is La chatte, by the forgotten Henri Sauget...Chic, economical, tuneful and unmistakeably Gallic, the suite's Overture and eight movements are a delightful soufflé.

American Record Guide, July/August 2013
This is Volume 9 of Hanssler's series dedicated to the scores Diaghilev commissioned for his Ballets Russes. Sauguet's Cat Woman (1927) is an elegant score. This is the only available recording. Its emotional content reminds me of the best of Ravel in that its feelings are under control, but utterly genuine for all that. The music is traditional, with suave scoring and refined melodies. It has some clever touches. The opening phrase of its final segment - Hymn. The description of the original ballet production itself sounds fascinating, with staging and propping by Naum Gabo - one of my favorite sculptors - and his brother, Anton Pevsner.
