Notes & Reviews:
Based on interviews with veterans of five wars conducted by the composer, Soldier Songs traces the path of the soldier through three phases of life - Youth (playing war games) Warrior (time served in the military) and Elder (aged, wise, reflective).
American Record Guide, July/August 2013
David Little's Soldier Songs was written "to try and figure things out". After interviewing every veteran he knew from young to old, David had a body of material he used to create a theatrical reflection on the current state of war from the perspective of the people who fight in it. Broken into three major parts - child, warrior, and elder - Little's work covers the influence of GI Joe and the Call of Duty, franchises on children, an accompanying desensitization to war, and a survivor of military service. The music itself revolves around a single baritone voice. The 'Prelude' and 'War after War' are great collages of raw interview recordings mixed with electronics and dark, atmospheric accompaniment that are drastically different from the remainder of the work and, because it delivers the story of people who were there in an inherently neutral manner, are vastly superior as well.
