Notes & Reviews:

Bartók's symphonic poem Kossuth stands in the shadow of his later works and is hardly ever performed. Nevertheless, it in every way merits description as a gem. Bartók, wrote this piece when he was a mere 20 years of age. The piece does not celebrate his life but rather that of the Hungarian freedom fighter Kossuth.

The familiar Concerto for Orchestra also gets a good reading, its gypsy elements fully audible. CPO's SACD sound properly captures the tart sonorities. The album layout itself is effective, beginning with Kossuth as a great curtain-raiser, then the concerto as the main event. The last cue, the sure-fire Romanian Dances, makes a dandy encore.
