Notes & Reviews:
Albert Lortzing was, as John Warrack has noted, "the most inventive composer of opera with spoken dialogue in mid-19th-century Germany," and his skills are evident in this wonderful performance. This recording of Der Waffenschied is the alt gem in the highly acclaimed Electrola Collection series of comic operas by Albert Lortzing on Electrola, following Undine, Zar und Zimmermann und Der Wildschutz. It is led by Hermann Prey, Lotte Schadle, Kurt Bohme and Fritz Ollendorff under the baton of Fritz Lehan. Lortzing: Der Wafferschied is part of the Electrola Collection, a series that celebrates the historic record label, Electrola. Electrola was part of the EMI Classics unit in Germany best known for the rich catalogs, masterful artists and iconic gramophone trademark.

A Meistersinger-lite comedy of amour under the artisans sparkles under Fritz Lehan's baton. Feisty ensemble and a nimble performance from Lotte SchSdle.

Their performances knock spots off what one might expect from the standard German provincial opera houses who would normally have staged the work at that time...Lehan keeps everything on the move, and has an appropriately light touch.
