Notes & Reviews:

Landscapes is a journey through the rich tapestry of American wind band music, performed by one of the country's leading ensembles. One of Michael Torke's most admired works, Javelin has been described as a 'sonic olympiad', while his arrangement of Mojave was made especially for Ji Hye Jung and the University of Kansas Wind Ensemble. Frank Ticheli explores vibrant colors in sound in his moving An American Elegy, while the Copland arrangements encapsulate the depth and variety of his imagination.

American Record Guide, September/October 2013
The all-American program opens with Michael Torke's high-energy Javelin, composed in 1994 for the Atlanta Symphony and the Olympic Games. This arrangement by Merlin Patterson is given an appropriately energetic reading. UK faculty marimbist Ji Hye Jung seems just a few feet away in Torke's genial, 15-minute Mojave, so we hear the intimate details of her solo performance - her instrument's deeply resonant bass notes, her virtuosity in the fast passages near the work's ending. I'm impressed that this band can play with such fine ensemble precision while sounding so mellow in Torke's rhythmically intricate works. Frank Ticheli's American Elegy (2000) commemorates the people who died at Columbine High School in 1999. The tenminute work is emotional. I'm impressed to learn that Simple Gifts (2002) was commissioned by a middle school. The settings of Shaker melodies are expertly scored and satisfying to hear. Steve Leisring and Margaret Marco are the UK faculty trumpet and English horn soloists in an expressive reading of Copland's Quiet City. Fine playing by both, and by the student collaborators.
