Notes & Reviews:

With this latest recording of the choral works of Hindemith, the elite Stuttgart team under the direction of Marcus Creed continues its award-winning series of recordings together with the choral works by Kurtág, Carter, Schnittke and Villa-Lobos.

Gramophone Magazine, July 2013
What draws these disparate strands so effectively together is the excellent singing of the SWR Vocal Ensemble under Marcus Creed...this release, performed with real polish and recorded in a suitably generous acoustic by Hänssler Classics, is a valuable addition to the catalogue.

American Record Guide, September/October 2013
There's terrific music here - some old friends, actually - and I'm pleased to welcome them into current awareness and into my permanent collection. For his Apparebit Repentina Dies Hindemith took hold of some medieval poems describing the world's apocalyptic last days, and set them for mixed choir and a complement of brass. It's a 20-minute work divided into four sections, each full of catchy melodies and sumptuous writing for the trumpets, horns, trombones, and tuba. It's an elegant affair full of evocative tone-painting and expressive story-telling. I was lucky enough to sing the Apparebit in college, and I recall being mesmerized by the fugual writing for the trumpets. I owned an LP of it long ago. It is a joy to be reunited with it in this classy performance caught in resplendent sound by the Hanssler engineers. I think I sang some of the Six Chansons in high school; and they, too, supplied a lovely introduction to 20th Century choral music. This is Hindemith in Debussy mode (the Rilke poems are in French). It is delicate music, full of references to nature and moments of bright, unassuming fun. ("And God will grant His blessing, for that marriage honour Him, and hinder the devil from his artifices", admonishes Martin Luther in 'Vom Hausregiment', the first song of the set.) The music is sharper and more angular, as the didacticism of the words animates the singing. Again the performance is excellent, with the singers sounding like the Tallis Scholars one minute and a ringing brass choir the next as Hindemith resolves his harmonies with attitude.
