Notes & Reviews:

This album includes three of Johann Sebastian Bach's monumental suites for unaccompanied cello, performed by one of the world's most celebrated double bass virtuosos, DaXun Zhang, in his own original transcriptions. Zhang performs regularly with Yo Yo Ma's Silk Road Ensemble and the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center.

American Record Guide, September/October 2013
DaXun Zhang makes a good case for playing his three suites on the double bass. He retunes his upper strings and plays the later suites in different keys from the originals. He plays very musically and with a technical polish that a cellist would be proud to achieve. He uses a light touch. He also plays all the double- stops. This is a fine recording.

Wonderful performance of 3 Bach Suites for unaccompanied cello on Bass!
This recording features Daxun Zhang performing three of Bach’s suites for unaccompanied cello on bass – specifically, Suite No. 1 in G Major, Suite No. 5 in c-minor, and Suite No. 4 in E-flat Major. And my goodness, can Mr. Zhang play. The works themselves are always stunning when performed well on the Cello, but on this recording they really sound fantastic on the bass. And, as the liner notes explain, since the bass is tuned in fourths, it is extremely difficult to play certain chords and double-stops. But you wouldn’t know that just by listening. The playing is seemingly effortless, and the warmth of the bass is just marvelous.

This CD is extremely well recorded, the material is fantastic (it’s Bach!), and I can’t say enough about the quality of the performance. Just buy it – you’ll love it!
