Notes & Reviews:

This recording is a collection of 10 moving works for cello by March, Bartholomew, Beeler, Sherrill, Gottschalk, and Ascioti. Cellist Ovidiu Marinescu demonstrates the instruments ability to connect the slow and brooding with the meditative and joyous, and beyond.

American Record Guide, July/August 2013
It opens with a three-piece collection by one Andrew March, who writes three expressively intense pieces in a contemporary. Greg Bartholemew is represented by a short, pleasant piece for flute and cello, very pretty. Then we have two four movement suites and a set of variations by Alan Beeler, all short and relatively sweet. The Dance Suite is for violin and cello, the rest for cello solo. Bill Sherrill's Divertimento includes all the strings. It is five minutes in length, in one continuous movement, tonal and lovely. The major work on the program is Arthur Gottschalk's 21-minute sonata In Memoriam. Its three movements are headed with initials. This is a thoughtful work, as one might expect, quite lively in its outer movements. Nicholas Anthony Ascioti's movement for piano trio is called 'Adirondack Meditation'. The piece itself is lovely in intent. Marinescu is from Romania. All of the composers all are still alive and active. This is an interesting program for its variety and the expressive character of the music. The playing is competent and musically expressive. The recording is good.
