Notes & Reviews:

On this release, part of Praga's Reminiscences series of remastered historic recordings, four legendary artists prove the timelessness of the music of Camille Saint-Saëns. Pianist Emil Gilels, violinists Isaac Stern and Arthur Grumiaux and cellist Mstislav Rostropovich dazzle in solo concertos by this eclectic composer, written during a revival of the great classical forms in the late 1800s. Their partners in these works - conductors Eugene Ormandy, André Cluytens, Jean Fournet and Sir Malcolm Sargent - are legendary in their own right and make this SACD a must-have for any serious collector.

American Record Guide, September/October 2013
The sound is excellent. When I first saw that this is an SACD. Praga's engineers certainly extracted a great deal of juice from this old fruit. Gilels makes the piano concerto sound a lot like Liszt. Also good is hearing Andre Cluytens in French repertoire. Rostropovich takes a hearty, red-blooded approach to the better known of Saint-Saens's cello concertos - and again, I'm happy with that. Grumiaux nails it perfectly with a lyrical, unforced tone and limber articulation of the notes that makes for an expressive, pleasing interpretation. Stern in the Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso is a known quantity - and very gratifying, too.
