Performers Composer

Notes & Reviews:

Burgmuller may not be a household name, but it is easy to see from this charming release why he is a composer who deserves more recognition. Contucci and Mastroprimiano perform with aplomb, the latter in full command of the wonderful Graf fortepiano - one of only 60 surviving instruments by this foremost Viennese craftsman of the 19th century.

American Record Guide, July/August 2014
This recording champions the songs of Norbert Burgmnller, a contemporary of Robert Schumann and friend of Felix Mendelssohn who died suddenly of a seizure in a swimming pool at 26. His songs are, for the most part, short, charming, and show some imagination in employment of chromaticism and form. He uses texts of leading poets, including Heine, Goethe, and Uhland. Burgmnller's songs, lovely as they are. In listening to the sonata, I was struck by the tragedy of this composer's early death.
