Notes & Reviews:

Die schweigsame Frau by Strauss, premiered in 1935, represents what is perhaps his most virtuosic and technically demanding score both for the orchestra and the soloists. This may also be one of the reasons why this turbulent masterpiece is only relatively rarely performed today.

Gramophone Magazine, August 2013
The voices in this new set are quite fine: Julia Bauer is the equal of any in the title-role and Franz Hawlata as Morosus has the kind of baritone sound that readily reveals the character's painful, old-age isolation.

International Record Review, June 2013
Hawlata is not only funny but also remarkably accurate and well focused, even in the very low notes...Bauer's great achievement on this recording is her seemingly effortless combination of both technical brilliance and dramatic expressiveness...it comes as close as any of the modern recordings to an authentically theatrical account of this charming and neglected opera.

The Guardian, 13th June 2013
Frank Beermann adopts slower speeds than his predecessors, which opens a deep vein of sadness. His approach is matched by a superb performance from Franz Hawlata, whose Morosus is not the usual curmudgeon but an ageing man confronted by the cruelty of youth...this irrevocably changes the way we listen to the piece itself, which makes it a significant achievement.

American Record Guide, September/October 2013
The music has all of Strauss's musical trademarks: big, bold melodies, rich orchestration. Chemnitz does a sensational job. These are significant, big voiced singers, with a superb orchestra. A complete German-English libretto is included.
