Notes & Reviews:

Delos' "strong personality" is due, above all, to the pioneering goals and philosophy of late founder Amelia S. Haygood, whose unshakable faith in the power of classical music, determination to record deserving American artists, championing of unusual repertoire, and cutting-edge recording technology forged an independent label that quickly gained a worldwide reputation for extraordinary artistry and the audiophile quality of its recordings. This 3-disc collection celebrates 40 choice tracks drawn from Delos' catalog of over 500 orchestral, vocal and chamber/instrumental recordings.

Reviews

40 Years!
Everybody is entitled to an extravagant 40th anniversary party. After all, 40 years is
a significant milestone whichever way you cut it. Delos has much to celebrate. Over the
years they have amassed a prestigious catalog remarkable for its musical and sonic excellence. Along the way, they have championed many deserving artists, too many to enumerate here. Spearheaded by the zeal of founder, Amelia Haygood, later tapping the formidable technical expertise of sound engineer, John Eargle, Delos quickly ascended to the top tier of creative, independent labels based in the U.S.A. This 3 disc survey is laid out as follows: Disc 1 is devoted to orchestral literature; Disc 2 is comprised of operatic and vocal material; Disc 3 features instrumental and choral selections. There is much to savor here. While one can question the inclusion of individual tracks, on balance the variety and quality result in a rewarding listening experience. The substantial liner notes, brimming with interesting technical and anecdotal details is a further enticement. Suggested track samples: Disc 1= #4 Khachaturian #6 Hanson #8 Hovanhess
Disc 2= #2 Leoncavallo #6 Villa-Lobos #10 Copland Disc 3= #4 Mozart #5 Griffes #10 Durufle.
