Notes & Reviews:

San Francisco-based organist Jonathan Dimmock enjoys an international career, a fact made abundantly clear by his truly worldwide vision for repertoire and recording. For his fifth recording with the Loft records family he performs on the glorious organ at the Cathedral of Saint Bavo, the "Grote Kerk" of Haarlem, Netherlands.

American Record Guide, September/October 2013
This recording would be an excellent introduction to the organ works of Bach for the novice listener. I expect it will also be a delight to the connoisseur. Jonathan Dimmock plays the great Christian Mnller organ in the church of St Bavo, Haarlem, Holland. It was the largest organ in the world when it was completed in 1738, highly celebrated in its day and still regarded as one of the finest organs in existence. It's beautiful fatade is possibly the world's most photographed organ case. The packaging includes several striking photographs taken by Dimmock. The program opens with the imposing Wedge Prelude & Fugue in E minor (S 548). The immediate impression is one of spacious grandeur with a dark-hued organ tone of weight and dignity. This sound is a bit warmer and better balanced. The other major works on this program are the Toccata & Fugue in D minor (S 565), the Passacaglia & Fugue in C minor (S 582), and the early Prelude & Fugue in E (S 566), a work that displays its North German heritage with two fugal sections surrounded by brilliant passages in Stylus Phantasticus. Dimmock also includes a transcription of the slow movement from the Harpsichord Concerto in F minor (S 1056). Dimmock's playing is solid, coherent, and thoughtful, without annoying eccentricities of tempo and articulation. Given the weight of organ tone and liveliness of the church's acoustic, he favors deliberate tempos, particularly in the Wedge and the fugue of S 565. He presents the Passacaglia & Fugue with fairly frequent changes of registration in a quasiorchestral approach. Dimmock's playing seems intended for the music lover.
