Notes & Reviews:

Logan Skelton is a much sought after pianist, teacher and composer whose work has received international critical acclaim. As a composer he has a special affinity for art song, having composed well over a hundred songs, including numerous song cycles. Critics have noted the close fusion of text and music in Skelton's songs, how words are "...illuminated with brilliance and deep emotional power" (American Record Guide). BGR283 present two song cycles - "The Islander," on poems by Walter Anderson, and "Into Deep Waters" on poems by the composer's father, Zan Skelton, performed by soprano Jennifer Goltz, baritone Stephen Lusmann and the composer at the piano, while BGR285 presents two song cycles on poems by Emily Dickinson, "An Intimate Nature" and "Unknown Peninsula," performed by soprano Jennifer Goltz and the composer at the piano. BGR287 presents two song cycles - "The Mad Potter," on poems by George Ohr, and "Kind of Weather" on poems by Marshall Clyburn, performed by baritone Stephen Lusmann with the composer at the piano.

American Record Guide, November/December 2013
Logan Skelton is fascinated with the artist who works alone and develops his own idiosyncratic style. Skelton's practice is to take texts by the subject - poetry, letters, journals, etc. - and keep them mostly intact, setting them to his own music. Each cycle does seem to have its own theme in addition to the person it is: Dickinson's set outlines a relationship between the poet and nature analogous to one between two lovers, for example. I would go with the Dickinson songs for the poetry.
