Notes & Reviews:

Rarely available on one disc, this recording from Hyperion presents the complete music for piano and orchestra by Igor Stravinsky, performed by the Gramophone Award-winning team of pianist Steven Osborne, the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and conductor Ilan Volkov. The taut rhythmic brilliance of this music is perfectly suited to the particular talents of these superb performers. In particular, Volkov's mastery of Stravinsky's neo-classical idiom is clear from the ecstatic critical response to his recordings of many of the composer's orchestral works.

The Observer
Steven Osborne, ever a poised, technically impeccable virtuoso, combines clarity with heart.

Sunday Times, 19th May 2013
Osborne plays all with diamantine brilliance.

The Telegraph, 29th May 2013
Osborne manifests both his rhythmic élan and his refined sense of tonal shading, underpinning the performances with virile energy...finding a spirited sparring-partner in the BBC Scottish Symphony under Ilan Volkov.

Financial Times, 8th June 2013
The outstanding work here is the Concerto for piano and wind instruments (1923-24), played by Osborne in a way that finds wit in the rhythmic quirks while lending substance to the music's 18th-century references, so that it never sounds dry.

BBC Music Magazine, July 2013
With Steven Osborne as soloist, the concertante works are in exceptionally good hands...After the Capriccio's grandiose opening, Osborne's tight control of the piano's insistent, driving textures provides a firm foundation for the opening movement's unexpected humanity and charm.

Gramophone Magazine, August 2013
Osborne and Volkov tick a major Stravinsky box.

American Record Guide, September/October 2013
The Piano Concerto reading is deliberate, full in tone, and commanding. It can seem metronomic, but played with this kind of dark sound and intensity, it is effective. Balances are exquisite from top to bottom; everything is gripping, clear-cut, and full in tone. The Webernesque Movements for Piano and Orchestra is from Stravinsky's 12-tone period and is attractive in its way. The performance makes as good a case for this piece as you are likely to hear. The Concerto in D for string orchestra defines warm, sophisticated, and lively in Stravinsky. It is also very stylish, especially the gorgeous slow movement. The short 'Volga Boatmen' and Canon on a Russian Popular Tune are big, bold, and enjoyable.
