Notes & Reviews:

GRAMMY®-nominated Ronn McFarlane is joined by Mindy Rosenfeld to present Nine Notes that Shook the World. Explained by Rosenfeld, "This recording is a gathering of some of our favorites, a musical feast. A wide cross section of styles [... ], these timeless tunes from past centuries still touch us in ways words cannot, stirring our life energy."

American Record Guide, November/December 2013
On two sets of dances, Rosenfeld accompanies McFarlane on a small single-row harp. The first is from 16th Century England and includes 'My Lady Carey's Dompe' and 'Lady Wynfield's Rownde'; what she terms the "Ladies Set". The other is a creative arrangement of Le Roy's 'Passemeze', well-known to lutenists and guitarists; but adding a supportive background on harp, McFarlane's virtuosity shines even brighter. McFarlane offers subtle and effective accompaniments to the baroque pieces. The recording engineer, Daniel Shores, is to be commended for his sensitivity. Finally, Rosenfeld on the last track does play 17th Century style bagpipes in the arrangement of Robert Ballard's 'Branles de Village', returning this baroque evocation of village pipers to the instrument whose "nine notes shook the world".

A Playful Collection
“Nine Notes That Shook The World” Ronn McFarlane & MindyRosenfeld SONO LUMINUS

This collection is a happy musical convergence of deep scholarship and imaginative improvisation, performed here by Ronn McFarlane on Renaissance and Baroque lutes and his Baltimore Consort band mate Mindy Rosenfeld on various flutes and fifes, as well as harp and bagpipe, all built to period specifications. The music presented spans the 16th through the 18th centuries and includes English, Irish and Scottish tunes, in addition to material from Italy, Germany, France and Flanders.
Avoiding the manuscript and “authentic” performance practice-obsessed approach advocated by many in today’s musica antigua movement, this duo chooses instead to mix and match (and, sometimes, juxtapose) the harmonic and rhythmic variety of their sources, adapting music originally intended for other instruments (like “Lady Carey’s Dompe”, a virginal piece) or improvising a harp part to go with an established Adrien LeRoy tune. The result is a sound that is lively and spontaneous, like a private jam session by two very well traveled court musicians who’ve known and played with each other for decades.
Cleanly recorded, with clear and concise liner notes by Ms. Rosenfeld regarding the sources of the music and the instruments used by the performers, “Nine Notes That Shook The World” is another example of the kind of excellent specialist work done by the Sono Luminus label.
A must-have for students and fans of Renaissance and Baroque music, this recording will be a pleasant surprise to the general listener who thinks of early music as dry and academic; these two great American virtuosi opt for a more playful attitude that manages to make even four hundred year old music sound fresh.

Some very attractive early music!
Music of the late Renaissance and early Baroque is not my forte but I have always enjoyed the simple beauty of the instrumental works of the period. The works here are a very nice collection of intimate parlor music or court tunes designed for simple listening pleasure, such as during or after a nice meal. The two players in this talented duo met while students at Peabody and players in the Baltimore Consort. Ronn McFarlane is a very accomplished lutist and Mindy Rosenfeld plays flutes, harp and bagpipe with great style. The two make beautiful music and a true symbiosis of this set of classical, courtly works as well as folk materials. Some of the pieces, such as those by Negri and Caroso were intended as dance instructional music. The Scottish and Celtic folk materials are quite charming, such as "Dorrington Lads" or the William McLeod set of songs "Sitting in the Stern of a Boat" Little set pieces by such "big name" composers as Handel, Bach and Dowland are present as well. I was most impressed with the playing. Flautist acquaintances tell me that these early keyless flutes and their modern replicas are quite hard to control. Mindy Rosenfeld plays with lovely tone and an admirable control of pitch. Ronn McFarlane's instruments also have beautiful, dark and authentic tone and his playing is sensitive to the style. This Sonos Luminus set holds a conventional CD as well as the sonically rich audio blu-ray and both sound quite nice with an "in person" quality to them. As I mentioned, this music is not my usual listening material but I enjoyed this collection quite well. Some simple, attractive small pieces played exceptionally well.
