Notes & Reviews:

In the fifty years between Vaughan Williams's Three Impressions for Orchestra and his Prelude on an Old Carol Tune, despite unprecedented worldwide social and political change, the composer's style remained remarkably consistent. The Impressions, recorded here for the first time, describe three natural beauties of England - Burley Heath, Harnham Down and The Solent. The Mayor of Casterbridge was written for a radio serial broadcast in 1951, and it too receives its world première. The remainder of the disc includes the first book of the Songs of Travel and the Four Hymns for tenor, viola & strings. Performers include tenor Andrew Kennedy, baritone Roland Wood, violist Nicholas Bootiman and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra led by Paul Daniel.

American Record Guide, July/August 2014
That's what makes this new recording so interesting. The album, called "The Solent: 50 Years of Music by Ralph Vaughan Williams", includes two world-premiere recordings. The first of these is the Three Impressions for Orchestra, composed in 1902, when Vaughan Williams was 30 years old. The final piece, Incidental Music to the Mayor of Casterbridge, was written 50 years later. Daniel and his orchestra give the Three Impressions an appropriately expressive debut, performing with warmth and immediacy. The other piece is also played with deep feeling. Songs of Travel (Book I) is another youthful work written between 1902 and 1904, and it sets to music the poetry of Robert Louis Stevenson. These lyrically appealing performances owe their success to the baritone Roland Wood. Violist Nicholas Bootiman and orchestra supplied him with unfailingly sensitive accompaniment.
