Notes & Reviews:

The Dream of Gerontius is widely regarded as Elgar's finest choral work, and some consider it his masterpiece. The work is coupled on this album with Elgar's Symphony no.1 making this a well-filled 2 SACD set. The Dream of Gerontius has not been released on SACD before, and is a must buy for an SACD aficionado.

Gramophone Magazine, December 2013
On this evidence, Edo de Waart is clearly an Elgar conductor of no mean instinct. Both performances benefit from his judiciously clear-sighted direction...there's an endearing freshness, sense of new discovery and wholehearted application about this substantial undertaking.

American Record Guide, March/April 2014
It is certainly gratifying to see Elgar performed by Belgian musicians and conducted by De Waart. Among the soloists only the Gerontius (Auty) is British. English music from this period has never enjoyed much international attention, and works this fine deserve better. This new recording has a lot of assets. To start, De Waart has a fine grasp of the score, the pacing is good, and his long experience with music of this period (Strauss, Mahler, Wagner) holds him in good stead. This is, I think, De Waart's first Elgar recording. In addition to the conductor both orchestra and chorus are strong. The Ghent chorus sounds very good. In addition we have two very fine soloists in the mezzo and baritone. Breedt has a nice quality with lovely soft singing and some thrilling high notes, and Hancock has a big, authoritative voice with a baritone bottom. The First Symphony is more satisfying. The orchestra plays with lots of spirit and fairly prominent brass and percussion. Pentatone's SACD sound is exemplary - rich and clear with lots of detail.
