Notes & Reviews:

Gramophone Magazine, December 2013
There are few musicians who appear more steeped in their worlds than Sigiswald Kuijken and one sense that Bach's pure instrumental vein frees his spirit like none other...a mesmerising purpose, natural balance and transparency of sound bring these works alive with quite remarkable results.

Early Music Review, October 2013
The resulting chamber music quality of these performances is refreshing, enabling one to hear the detail of the contrapuntal inner parts that is lacking in so many other recordings... Enjoy these moments... Even if you have another recording of these suites, do get this one.

BBC Music Magazine, January 2014
In the hands of skilful players such as these they sound convincing and that equally applies to all the musicians of La Petite Bande.

Following their acclaimed recording of the Brandenburg Concertos, Sigiswald Kuijken leads his ensemble La Petite Bande in Bach's four Orchestral Suites. Kuijken has chosen to use an unusually small ensemble. Alongside the harpsichord, the continuo group consists of two violones, a bass instrument significantly larger than the baroque cello and which produces a more resonant sound due to its larger body and thicker strings. What is especially remarkable about this recording, however, is the exclusive use of truly natural trumpets, without the auxiliary holes often present on instruments used in other so-called period instrument versions.
