- Jeremy Denk (Piano)
Notes & Reviews:
American Record Guide, January/February 2014
Jeremy Denk, a very active pianist and writer, has the number one classical album in this, his second Nonesuch recording (as of late October). It is good enough to be near the top of anyone's list. Like the Gould, there is a wealth of color and dynamic structure in each variation, then in each group of variations, and finally in the whole work. Denk's intimate and deep knowledge of this work is displayed both in his performance and on the DVD liner notes. After viewing the DVD, I felt I had attended a master lecture-demonstration and gained significant knowledge of the work. I also realized how incredibly detailed Denk's understanding of the music is. He takes most of the repeats and adds some very subtle ornamentation on the repeat. His beautiful touch and voicing make the strongest possible case for using a modern grand piano.
