Notes & Reviews:
The complete version of Orlando is presented for the first time on ATMA Classique. Singing the title role is English countertenor Owen Willetts, a rising figure on the international scene. He is joined by American soprano Amanda Forsythe, and several of the finest Canadian singers: Karina Gauvin, Allyson McHardy and Nathan Berg. This recording was produced following Orlando's performances at the 2012 Vancouver Early Music Festival.
New York Times, 29th January 2014
The Pacific Baroque Orchestra...plays with irresistible energy and the singers are alert and eloquent.
International Record Review, February 2014
[Gauvin's] Angelica offers possibly her finest recorded singing to date...flexibility, style, unaffected dignity...[Weimann] gives a highly intelligent, responsive reading and connects strongly with each vocal soloist...this release is certainly competitive where the superb ladies in the cast are concerned.
Gramophone Magazine, February 2014
Weimann's pacing of the action, choice of tempi and shaping of orchestral ritornellos are freshly marvellous...Berg's articulation of his coloratura and calmly authoritative characterisation are spot-on...Rare misfires are only minor quibbles about one of the most consistently charming Handel opera recordings I've reviewed in ages.
American Record Guide, May/June 2014
There are merits to all these recordings. Devout Handelians should have both the Hogwood and Christie recordings. Against that, I find this newest recording enjoyable, even satisfying.
