Notes & Reviews:

Tenor Mark Padmore shines in this program featuring three quintessential British song-cycles. He is joined by pianist Huw Watkins, oboist Nicolas Daniel and members of the Britten Sinfonia in Ralph Vaughan Williams's On Wenlock Edge and Ten Blake Songs and one of Peter Warlock's best-known works, The Curlew. Also included is The End by Jonathan Dove (a co-commission by Britten Sinfonia and Wigmore Hall with support from the Tenner for a Tenor campaign). The work receives its world première recording here.

Gramophone
Padmore is absolutely at his prime and a singer of extraordinary intensity.

American Record Guide, March/April 2014
Vaughan Williams wrote On Wenlock Edge in 1907 and Ten Blake Songs in 1957, just a year before he died. Warlock began The Curlew in 1915 and revised it in 1922. These three cycles alone would make a sufficient program. All these works are akin to Blake's Songs of Innocence and Experience, from which the texts for eight of the Ten Blake Songs are taken. The performances are brilliant and the sound is exquisite. Praise also to Nicholas Daniel for his fine oboe work in the Ten Blake Songs, where the vocal line is accompanied only by oboe in all. His English horn in the Dove and Warlock works is very effective. The exquisite playing of the Britten Sinfonia captures the emotional depth of this music. The recording is vivid and vibrant where you want it to be, soft and mournful where it needs to be. This is one you don't want to miss, even if you have several fine recordings of the Vaughan Williams and Warlock songs.
