Notes & Reviews:

The waltz has inspired many composers. Featuring works ranging from the Romantic era to the twentieth century, this collection from pianist Aldo Ciccolini offers a fascinating survey of the genre. Of course, he reserves a special place for music of French composers, both famous and less well known, a repertoire that has been both a specialty and a passion since the start of his career. With thirteen works by thirteen composers, this recital is organized around two pillars, the most extended pieces on the program: Fauré's third Valse-Caprice Op.59 and Gabriel Pierné's suite Viennoise. Ciccolini says of the collection, "It amused me to mix and match all these different pieces, some of them serious, others very tuneful and even popular."
